Safe Place to Park a Community Priority

The town of Sedona, Ariz., is in the middle of a debate over what to do with a rundown theater that's been there for 20 years.

The town wants to tear down the Sedona Performing Arts Center and replace it with workforce housing for its workers, but residents aren't so sure.

They're also not so sure that tearing down the theater is the way to do it.

They're also not so sure that replacing it with housing for the town's unemployed workers is the way to do it.

The issue came up at a city council meeting earlier this month, the Arizona Daily Sun reports.

The city's Safe Place to Park program offers short-term housing for the homeless, and residents objected to a proposal to turn the site into yet another parking lot to make way for housing for the town's workers.

"It is imperative now, more than ever, to steer the city's resources towards building a sustainable future for its residents, prioritizing workforce housing over redundant projects," the town's Concerned Citizens group wrote in a letter to the city council, arguing that the proposed project would be a "White Elephant" that "stands as a 'White Elephant' impractical and aligned with Sedona's current needs."
