Arts Playlist: University of Delaware Expanding Its Performance Arts Education

The University of Delaware is making a splash with its new Department of Theatre and Dance, which will offer a major in performance arts, the News Journal reports.

"There's no other place in the country where a student can come to the university and study theater, and in those classes be taught by the professionals and the professional Equity theater, on their campus, and, at some point, be integrated into at the undergraduate level," says Steve Tague, who will serve as interim chair of the program.

The university's minor in theater and dance already includes a major in dance, but the new program will expand that to include broader theater courses, as well as courses taught by UD's professional REP Theatre.

The news comes at a time when arts education in the US is facing increasing scrutiny, especially in light of the recent closing of several arts schools in Delaware and the diminishing arts education at major universities across the country.

But the University of Delaware is bucking the trend.

"All of that stuff is really the reason why we like to live," Tague says.

"Seat belts save lives and art makes it worth living."
