After State'S Arts and Culture Cuts, Groups Push for Local Funding

"I think it's absolutely insane that they're talking about taking away arts funding because Tucson literally is art."

That's the reaction of a former artist-in-residence at the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, which relies heavily on state grants to fund its programming, including food festivals, concerts, and more.

Arizona Gov.

Katie Hobbs signed a new state budget last week that, among other things, reduces funding for arts programs to $5 million, down from the $10 million allocated last year, the Arizona Daily Star reports.

"Very rarely will there ever be a grant that says we'll help you keep the lights on, we'll help you pay staff," says SAACA Executive Director Kate Marquez.

"But in this case, we will see a cut to that."

SAACA, which received 75% of its funding from local government, says it plans to lobby local governments to secure additional funding to support Southern Arizona's arts, food, and culture.

But Hill isn't so sure.

"When I came in to do my tour of the place, I thought I was coming to paint," she says.

"And then they showed me this music space back here."
