The musical Legally Blonde is hitting the stage at North Carolina's Elon University, but don't expect to see any of Elle Woods or her dog Bruiser on the stage.
Instead, audiences will see Rufus, Elle's bulldog, and Bruiser, a quadruped robot in a costume designed by engineering major Zoe Scherpbier, the News & Observer reports.
Scherpbier, who also has a theater background, says she "jumped at the chance" to design the costumes for the show, in a collaboration between Elon's Music Theatre Program and the Department of Engineering.
The idea came about when Courtney Liu, the show's director, and Blake Hament, an assistant professor of engineering, were brainstorming ways to blend their fields at Elon.
"So many doors have opened," Scherpbier says.
"It's been interesting to see them learn our lingo and appreciate being part of a collaboration I might not have thought I'd be involved in a play this year, but now I see that engineering can be in other parts of life."
