Kirks' Grocery a Reflection of Billings' Messy Creative Side

When Shane de Leon and Mary Serbe opened Kirks' Grocery in Billings, Mont., five years ago, they didn't want to sell groceries.

Instead, they wanted to open a place where people could come for art, music, and food.

And that's exactly what they've accomplished, the Missoulian reports.

"It's a reflection of the community, in all the ways that community binds people together: food, visual art, music, and a place to gather, share, and explore," Serbe says.

Kirks' Grocery features local, regional, and international artists' work, including paintings that "smash Western lore with modern art," per the Missoulian.

There's also music, readings, and "performances" in the back, where de Leon and Serbe invite people to come in and "share and explore," de Leon says.

"It's for everyone, especially for people who feel like they are on the fringe of things," Serbe adds.

The pair met when they worked at the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, and when they found the space, they decided to open it as an art space, too.
