A Missouri state trooper is being hailed as a hero after he rescued a woman from a burning car and saved her life, the Springfield News-Leader reports.

Trooper Austin Royster, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop D, was driving a woman to the hospital in Springfield on June 3 when he saw her car on fire.

While he was trying to put out the fire, Royster found the unresponsive woman inside.

"While providing care for the driver, Royster determined she was under the influence of a controlled substance and placed her under arrest," the Missouri State Highway Patrol says in a press release.

Royster administered first aid to the woman, who was taken to the hospital and later died.

Troopers say the woman was under the influence of a controlled substance.

Royster was one of four troopers to receive the Meritorious Service Award from the Missouri Highway Patrol.
